The Bronx Celebrates: Stan Sherer Long Life to Your Children — A Portrait of High Albania
Stan Sherer has visited Albania many times since it opened its borders to visitors in 1991. He has traveled throughout the country by bus, truck, and on foot, staying with Albanian families in cities, villages, and rugged mountain outposts. Through this exhibition of black-and-white photographs, Sherer conveys the dignity of the Albanian people, the natural beauty of the Albanian landscape, and the rigors of everyday life. It is an Albania made up of individuals trying to rebuild their lives despite the poverty left by forty years of communism, the disastrous effects of the Yugoslav war, and the increasing unrest in nearby Kosava.
This exhibition is part of the gallery’s on-going series, The Bronx Celebrates, which features the work of artists with Bronx roots. Independent documentary photographer Stan Sherer, who grew up in the Bronx, received a Fulbright Fellowship to photograph daily life in northern Albania. Commissions have included Time Magazine, The Associated Press, United Press International, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Africa Report, Oxfam/America, and Yankee Magazine.
