Before ‘Neo’ and After ‘Post’
The Lehman College Art Gallery will present Before ‘Neo’ and After ‘Post’, an exhibition of work by contemporary Russian artists from November 8 through December 20, 1`994. The exhibition has been curated by Alexandre Gertsman. there will be a reception for the artists on November 10 from 5:00 – 7:30 pm. The public is invited to attend.
It is the role of each new movement to define itself against the prevailing theories. According to guest curator Alexandre Gertsman, “French linguistic philosophy and its analysis of art in the categories of the construction of language has catalyzed an artificial stagnation in art. Modernism was interested in the feelings produced by form. Postmodernism is interested in logic.” The works in the exhibition, Before ‘Neo’ and After ‘Post’ brings together the work of contemporary Russian artists whose work exists outside of these boundaries. In their hands, post-modern methods transform beyond ‘neo’ and ‘post’.
Artists in the exhibition include Olga Ast, Sergei Batovrin, Eric Bulatov, Vitaliy Dlugy, Simon Faibisovich, Rimma and Valeriy Gerlovin, Komar and Melamid, Alexander Kosolapov, Irina Nakhova, and Natalya Nesterova. This exhibition will include the first American exhibition of Olga Ast, the first New York City exhibition of the work of Sergei Batovrin, and the first appearance of the work by Vitaliy Dlugy since his death in 1991.
